Otjiwarongo meaning beautiful place in Otjiherero was first discovered by the Sans and Damaras around the year 1390. They were the first settlers in the area. During that time the Damaras named the city #kanubes.
Around 1900 the first German Namibians settle in Otjiwarongo. 4 years later a war was fought between the German and Herero people in which many Herero people lost their lives. Shortly after Otjiwarongo was established as a proper town an an administration point for the Germans.
Otjiwarongo was an important landmark as it was close to the narrow-gauge railway built from Swakopmund on the coast to the Otavi copper mine. This helped the city become a prosperous agricultural center.
In the present day, Otjiwarongo is one of the fastest growing cities in Namibia with many game farms and nature reserves located in and around the town.
